Sacramento ENT’s Dr. Varun Varadarajan recently completed the world’s first smart cochlear implant in a patient from the Sacramento area.
While hearing aids amplify sound, cochlear implants convert sound into an electrical signal and send it directly to the brain, bypassing damaged parts of the inner ear.
Dr. V noted that while historically, cochlear implants were only used for patients who were completely deaf, today’s technology allows people with residual hearing to receive them as well.
