Allergy shots (subcutaneous immunotherapy) are the most common form of immunotherapy. They can be used as a long-term treatment for seasonal, indoor and insect sting allergies. They are recommended for anyone whose symptoms are not well controlled through medications or those that want to reduce their long-term use of medications.
Typically, patients receiving immunotherapy are asked to come in once or twice a week for their allergy shots until a maintenance dose is reached. The frequency is gradually reduced over a period of several months, until you are receiving shots about once a month. It takes three to five years for your body to build up a tolerance to the allergen, so treatment is a long-term commitment.
To make immunotherapy more convenient, we have walk-in allergy shot clinic hours available at four of our locations.
